President Denny Brown welcomed a large crowd to the dedication ceremony of the new Bertrand H. Snell hall on Friday the 13th. Other speeches were given by Donald Clark (Chair of the Board of Trustees), Eric Steenburgh (VP Eastman Kodak Company), Raymond Meier (New York State Senator), Anthony Collins (VP for Academic Affairs) and finally by Michelle Dillon the president of CUSA. Almost all of the speakers thanked Helen S. Cheel, the daughter of Bertrand H. Snell, whom the building is dedicated to. Mrs. Cheel has been a very important friend and member of Clarkson University; she has donated a considerable amount of funds to the University.

Last Wednesday, Staff Sergeant Kenneth A. Johnson returned to Clarkson to speak to Army ROTC cadets. Johnson, a 1992 graduate with degrees in Engineering & Management and Psychology, came to speak about his experiences in the military and competing in the Olympics. Johnson was selected to compete this year in Sydney in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle and placed 38th out of 60.

Professor Norbert Ackerman of the Civil Engineering department took over as the Dean of the School of Engineering, a position he will hold for one year. Prof. Ackerman brings a wealth of experience and knowledge with him, as well as humor and candor that is refreshing to see in a place of administration.

Every semester Clarkson University attempts to supply its students with many opportunities including the group exercise classes held in the exercise room in the Andrew W. Schuler Recreational Center. The classes were not well advertised this semester and the coordinator, Julia Roque, hopes to send out an email next semester to let students know about the classes sooner.

Clarkson University’s student-run Internet Consulting Group (ICG) is the first organization in St. Lawrence County to offer the new Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification. This means that the group is authorized to train, test, and certify computer users in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
