Gunman kills five students at NIU
On Thursday, February 14, fire opened on a geology class of 160 students at Northern Illinois University. The gunman shot twenty-one people before killing himself. Five people, plus the gunman, were killed. According to students in the classroom, the killer burst into the room from a side door, drew a shotgun, and started firing on the first couple of rows.

On February 2, 2008, the chief executive of Yahoo, Jerry Yang, received a telephone call from Steven Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. Ballmer's message was curt and unfriendly: Microsoft was about to make public a hostile takeover bid for $44 billion to buy Yahoo.

Because of the large number of primaries all scheduled on the same date, many people called it "Super Tuesday." Democratic font-runners Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton earned roughly the same number of delegates: Obama won 847 and Clinton won 834.
