Interview with Tony Collins

This week President Tony Collins sat down with The Clarkson Integrator to discuss his plans for Clarkson in the upcoming year. Collins went into detail on one particular issue that has become a hot topic for discussion for many students on campus: the Amethyst Initiative.

Security Breach on S:/

On Tuesday, August 26, a non-malicious student intruder gained access to a restricted server and promptly reported the vulnerability to campus authorities. Approximately 245 employees and former employees had personal information, including name, social security number, and date of birth, compromised during the security breach.

On Wednesday evening, students from all across campus flocked towards Cheel Arena. All types of students, faculty and other community members were headed to the 'big event:' the annual Clarkson University Activities Fair. For those who didn't go, this fair informs students about extra-curricular opportunities on Clarkson's campus and in the community of Potsdam.

The park around the Temple of the Sun, built four centuries ago for ritual sacrifices to the sun, buzzed with modern activity, including badminton and table tennis. A boy ran around with a toy helicopter. Little kids bounced on a trampoline. The park was one of three sites in Beijing set aside by the Chinese government for legal protests during the Olympics.

Stuart O'Nan Speaks at Convocation
Stewart O'Nan, author of the novel Last Night at the Lobster, this year's Freshman summer reading assignment, spoke at the Convocation this past Tuesday, August 25. O'Nan is one of Granta's Best Young American Novelists. The ceremony began with an introductory speech by Clarkson University's Provost, Tom Young.

Marching in Mexico

On Saturday, August 30, thousands of Mexican residents marched, carrying picket signs and photographs of their abducted relatives and loved ones. The march was a challenge to the president of Mexico, Felipe Calderon. President Calderon has made fighting crime a government priority.

Perkins+Will visit Clarkson
Last spring, while students were preparing for final exams, a small committee was busy interviewing architects from around the country, to see who would get the job of designing Clarkson's soon-to-be-built student center. The chosen designers were Perkins+Will (or Perkins+Will according to their website).

Registering for the upcoming elections

The presidential elections, along with numerous federal, state, county, and town elections, will occur on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Being away at college is no excuse not to vote. In order to vote you must be a citizen of the United States, be at least 18 years old by Election Day, and be registered with your county's Board of Elections.
