When venturing off on spring break, the most anticipated and notorious break of them all, students often do not stop to think about safety. Having fun is the only thing on their minds, and safety often takes a back seat, especially when it comes to drinking and sex. Here are some safety tips to remember when you are on break.

Very often after hearing a story about carelessness with alcohol one can often be quoted as saying, "It will never happen to me." Well, sadly when it comes to drinking and sex, about twenty-one percent of the college women who experienced sexual aggression on a date were intoxicated at the time of the assault, and an additional thirty-two percent reported being mildly buzzed. Moreover, twenty-nine percent of those raped on a college campus were suspected to be given a date rape drug.

Let's face it; drinking and sex do not really go together. As everyone knows, when you are drinking you do things that you would not normally do, and oftentimes your ability to think clearly is altered. One study showed that after drinking, one in seven college-aged students had unprotected sex. Additionally, one in five had sex that they then regretted, and one in ten could not remember if they had sex or not.

Unprotected sex can lead to sexually transmitted diseases, such as Syphilis and Chlamydia, HIV, and even pregnancy. Here are some tips to remember when you are drinking on spring break: 1) Always have protection with you, and USE it if you have sex. 2) Set your drinking limit before a social drinking occasion. 3) Keep track of your drinks; don't let anyone put anything in them. 4) Space your drinks out over a period of time. 5) Use the buddy system. 6) Most importantly, you have the right to say no!

This spring break, please remember that just because you are in college does not mean that your spring break has to be crazy. You might end up doing things that you will regret. Having a good time does not always have to involve alcohol, sex or both!

Make sure that you stop by the Safety Spring Break table that will be set up in Cheel for some great give-aways. While you are there, be sure to sign Clarkson's Spring Break Safety pledge. Have a fun and safe spring break!
