Big innings ruined any chance of the Clarkson University Baseball team surprising the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon, as the Yellowjackets scored six in the fifth inning of game one and eight in the sixth inning of game two to sweep the Liberty League doubleheader 7-1 and 14-5 at Snell Field.

The Golden Knights dropped to 10-13 overall and 3-7 in conference play while Rochester improved to 24-5 and 15-1. The two teams will match up again on Sunday afternoon.

In the opening game, Mike Park came within two outs of pitching a complete game shutout to earn his third win of the season. Through seven innings of work, Park gave up just a tough-hop single in the first inning to the game's second hitter and a one-out homer in the seventh, while allowing only a handful of base runners in the remainder of the contest, striking out 11 hitters.

Clarkson's Greg Chojecki started nearly as well as Park did for the Yellowjackets, giving up just one run through the first four innings. Unfortunately, for Chojecki and the Knights, Rochester strung together six straight hits in the fifth, including a two-run homer by Ed Kahovec, and produced six runs in the inning to take a 7-0 lead. Clarkson wouldn't get on the scoreboard until its final at bat when Brett Peplowski homered to left field.

Despite the offensive onslaught in the fifth by Rochester, only one hitter finished with more than one hit for the Yellowjackets as Dan Brien was 2-for-4.

In game two, Rochester put runs on the scoreboard in the first and third before plating three more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead, but an eight run sixth inning proved to be the difference.

Nine batters reached base before the Knights were able to record an out in the inning, including six hits and three walks, but only one of those hits was for extra bases. A little late for a rally of great magnitude, Clarkson did its best to peck away at the big lead with runs in the bottom of the sixth, eighth and ninth, but the Knights were still a ways off.

Rochester's Pete McEneaney pitched well enough to earn his fifth win of the season, going seven innings while allowing four hits and three walks and striking out seven.

David Goerold took the loss for Clarkson, his second of the season. JJ Vanderstyne went 3-for-3 in game two, scoring twice and driving in another, while Dan Brien did even more damage, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two driven in. Blayne Fuke also was 4-for-5 and Matt Francis went 2-for-6, but with three RBIs. Mike Bresett went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Knights, and Matt Holiday was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs.
