OT win puts Men's Lacrosse in playoffs

Junior Tom Ross's goal early in overtime lifted the Clarkson University Lacrosse team to a 12-11 win over Skidmore in Liberty League action at Clarkson Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Knights clinched a berth in the upcoming conference playoffs.
Clarkson stands in second place in the conference with 4-1 mark in the Liberty League. Ranked 18 in the country, the Knights own an 8-3 overall record. The Green and Gold close out the regular season at league foe Rensselaer next Saturday, April 26 before beginning the playoffs on May 2.
Ross picked up a ground ball off a failed clearing attempt by Skidmore (7-6, 2-3) and sent in a quick shot from 20 yards out for the game-winner just 24 second into sudden-victory overtime.
Trailing 11-10 with less than one minute to play, Clarkson freshman Tyler Long scooped up a ground ball at midfield and got off a shot from 30 yards out that just trickled into an empty net with 37.5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score, forcing the extra session.
Both teams scored three times in the first quarter, but Clarkson held a 6-4 lead at the half. Skidmore out-scored the Knights 3-1 in the third quarter to make it a 7-7 game through 45 minutes of play.
The Thoroughbreds took a two-goal lead early in the fourth, but Clarkson answered back on goals by Ross and Long to tie it 9-9 with 5:33 left in the quarter. After both teams traded one goal, Skidmore took an 11-10 lead on junior Nick Coppola's score with just 1:33 left in regulation.
Junior Greg Gibbons led all scorers with a game-high four goals to go along with one assist to pace the Knights offensively. Ross tallied two goals and one assist, while junior Brian Hoey and Long scored twice. Senior Jon Cathcart and junior Erik Hilfinger rounded out the Clarkson goal scorers with one tally each.
Sophomore Matt Levesque led the Thoroughbreds with three goals, while Coppola tallied seven points, including a game-high five assists.
Clarkson out-shot Skidmore 43-30, while both teams recorded 34 ground balls.
Senior Greg Lamb made 10 saves and picked up a team-high five ground balls for the Knights. Sophomore John Capitani posted 13 stops for the Thoroughbred, including one in overtime. Sophomore Cory Barkoff recorded a game-high eight ground balls for Skidmore.
