Thursday night lineup

Sci-fi dominates Thursday nights- not the Sci-fi channel mind-you. What it dominates, I'm not sure. Two of the CW's most popular shows, Smallville and Supernatural air back-to-back each Thursday at 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. respectively. Thursday is also the night that new episodes of CSI, the original, air. Additionally, CBS follows CSI with a new show, The Mentalist.
Smallville returns to the CW for an eighth season. The show details the life of Clark Kent (aka Superman) as he reaches adulthood, comes to terms with his powers, and becomes the man in the little red cape that graces the movie screens year-after-year. Tom Welling stars as a young Clark with Kristin Kreuk as his primary love interest, Lana Lang, Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, his long-time friend, and Michael Rosenbaum as the vile Lex Luthor. Rosenbaum consistently provided interesting performances and the show became as much about Lex becoming a villain as Clark becoming a hero. Smallville started off strong back in 2001, providing viewers with a relatively unexplored perspective of the Superman lore. Over the past two seasons, however, the show has lost a significant number of cast members. Lionel Luthor (John Glover), Lex's father, left last season and Lex (Rosenbaum), Lana (Kreuk), and Kara (Laura Vandervoort) have parted with the show this season. The series has gained Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore), Lois Lane (Erica Durance), and Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) over the past few seasons and has survived on the cameos of other DC Heroes. The series is still fun, but its age has begun to show. Hopefully the writers will decide to wrap it up so that the show can maintain some of its dignity.
Following Smallville, the CW airs Supernatural at 9:00 p.m. The Winchester brothers hunt down a variety of monsters and legends, staring Jensen Ackles as Dean and Jared Padalecki as Sam. Supernatural's first season was interesting but nothing spectacular. The last two seasons, however, have made the show into one of the greats and a personal favorite of mine. So far the series has gone three-for-three in terms of season finales. Last season caught viewers off guard by killing off Dean (Ackles) and sending him to Hell. This season opened with Dean stuck inside of a coffin in a shallow grave. As the mystery of his return unravels, things get more heated between the brothers, and the war for the people of Earth spirals out of control. Anyone even remotely interested in myths, legends, and monsters should give Supernatural a try.
