A lot of people may have been asking themselves, "Who is that guy running away from those girls around campus?" It's that time of year again, when the question can be answered by any Sigma Chi brother. This past week was Derby Days. Derby Days is their annual week long event that consists of fundraising all week with the sororities of the Clarkson and SUNY Potsdam campus'. It is a very fun-filled week consisting of events, competitions that are worth points, and a great deal of fundraising. All the fundraising done throughout the week is donated to the Children's Miracle Network, found locally in Watertown.
This year, nine sororities participated in the Derby Days festivities. All three sororities on the Clarkson campus participated: Delta Zeta, Theta Phi Alpha, and Phi Sigma Sigma. From SUNY Potsdam, the participating sororities included Alpha Delta Kappa, Alpha Kappa Phi (commonly known as AGO), Zeta Gamma Sigma (Zeta), Sigma Gamma Phi (Arathusa), Phi Kappa Pi (Phi K), and finally Omega Delta Phi (Omega).
This year the theme for Derby Days was Around the World. Each sorority chose a country ranging from Italy to Jamaica, Ireland to Madagascar. Sororities also had designated Derby Darlings that were a representative of that sorority. Events and competitions between sororities were based on their country. The competitions on the first evening included a derby darling pageant, a karaoke competition, an event at 99, a skit/banner competition, and a brother auction. These events were all worth points, but points were also given out based on sororities capturing brothers. Two to three brothers were chosen as coaches for each sorority and helped to fundraise both on and off campus. Therefore, all brothers, except coaches, were on the run from these girls. Donahue three, Sigma Chi's themed housing on campus, was safe; however, this did not stop these girls. Even dinner at Cheel was not a safe zone.
Fundraising consisted of asking local businesses to sponsor Sigma Chi while they ran the "a-thon" for 40 hours straight, starting at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday evening. The seesaw was constantly operated by brothers for the entire time period through the rain, snow, and cold. This year the a-thon was located on the pit lawn at the intersection and, regardless of the conditions, spirits were always high. Fundraising also consisted of brothers having raffles; 50-50's; pancake breakfasts; and change jugs at local businesses, on campus, and at other small events. All donations were greatly appreciated by all and it was very much a success this year. This year, Arathusa made out like bandits on the Potsdam campus with a good chunk of money raised and winning Derby Days with the most points out of everyone that participated. Also worthy of note was Delta Zeta and Phi Sigma Sigma. Both sororities combined raised a total of over $3,000. Delta Zeta was second in points, followed closely by Phi Sigma Sigma. The brothers of Sigma Chi and all the sororities combined raised around $5,000 thanks to the generous support of the Potsdam community and students from Clarkson and Potsdam. Tune in next year for Derby Days!
