Right after the opening face-off it could be seen that it wasn't going to be the Knights night, as they were dominated physically and out-skated to loose pucks. The Bobcats took the lead midway during the first when a Clarkson defender got caught pinching and Quinnipiac was able to poke the puck behind him, race down the ice and fire a shot over freshman goaltender Paul Karpowich for his first goal of the season. A little more than a minute later Quinnipiac extended its lead to two when Dan Henningson let a laser go from the point that beat Karpowich. Brandon Wong and Jean-Marc Beaudoin earned assists on the tally.
It didn't take long for the Bobcats to add to their first period lead. Just 0:38 into the second Quinnipiac forward David Marshall scored his first of two goals in the game. Marshall was able to slap in a rebound off a wrap around attempt from Bryan Leitch. Eric Lampe also earned an assist on the play. The Knights got their best opportunity of the night when Quinnipiac defenseman Matt Sorteberg was given a major penalty and a game misconduct for a vicious hit from behind. Then a minute later the Bobcats were called for holding giving the Knights a two man advantage for a full two minutes. Unfortunately the Knights were unable to gain momentum on their power play and ended the period down by three.
Clarkson finally solved Quinnipiac goaltender Bud Fisher in the third as sophomore Lauri Tuohimaa was able to skate into the Bobcat zone, take the defender wide and fire a wrist shot into the lower right corner of the net. The shorthanded tally was Tuohimaa's sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Scott Freeman and senior Adam Bellows earned assists on the play. The Quinnipiac lead was back to three soon enough as less then a minute late Marshall netted his second goal of the contest assisted by Lampe and Zach Hansen.
Clarkson kept fighting in the game however, as Brandon DeFazio scored on a power play late in the third when he let a shot go from the slot off of a drop pass from Shea Guthrie. Sophomore Matt Beca also earned an assist on the play. The Knights pulled their goalie with 1:40 left in regulation, but the risk did not pay off as the game ended with the final score 4-2.
Karpowich stopped 27 of 31 shots in the loss, while Fisher stopped 22 out of 24, Clarkson attempts. Clarkson ended its power play drought finishing 1-4 on the man advantage. Quinnipiac was 0-6 on their power play opportunities. Clarkson will faceoff next week against Canisius College Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m..
