This year, Clarkson's Volleyball Team is made up of twelve incredibly talented players. Their skill and teamwork was visible throughout the season, which proved to be the best season of volleyball Clarkson has ever seen. The team went into the Liberty League with a 25-5 record and was picked as the number-one seed in the tournament. As predicted, the Golden Knights came out champions. Not only did the Golden Knights win the Liberty League Championship, but they also earned Clarkson's first ever invitation to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament.
Clarkson entered into the NCAA New England Regional held at Tufts University on Thursday, November 12, 2009. Clarkson's first match was against Wellesley College, whose record was 23-10. Family and friends of the Knights shared the experience with the team as they immersed themselves in the NCAA match.
Wellesley pulled ahead early, as Clarkson struggled to find their usual groove. The Knights found themselves falling behind, losing the first two sets 16-25 and 14-25 respectively. Facing possible elimination, Clarkson pulled ahead in the third set, showing their usual confidence and drive as many have seen all season. Wellesley challenged the Knights taking a two point lead twice midway through the set, however, Clarkson prevailed, winning the set 25-23 and pushing the match into a fourth set. Wellesley took control again in the fourth set, winning 25-19, and the match 3-1, thus eliminating Clarkson from the tournament.
Clarkson ended the season with a 28-7 record, and a .800 winning percentage. Courtney Haines, the only freshman on the team this season, was Clarkson's best hitter in the NCAA match with twelve kills. Fans look forward to a continuation of this talent and teamwork next season.
