Trivia night was held at Cheel Commons on Saturday, February 6. The event was organized by Res Life and the RA staff. Above, the winning team discusses a question.

A crowd of more than 100 students came to Cheel Commons to participate in Trivia Night on Saturday night, January 30. The apartment RA staff planned and implemented this Residence Life sponsored event for the entire residential community. Riverside RA Zach Butcher emceed as 25 teams of four students each competed in four rounds of trivia for the top prizes of Wal-Mart gift cards worth $100, $60 and $40.

Trivia Night was part of an initiative to provide more social programs for students late at night on weekends. Residence Life staff members noticed a lack of programming on Saturday nights after 11:00 p.m. and decided to fill in the gap themselves. RAs intend to provide fun programs nearly every weekend during the semester that are open to the entire residential community in addition to the programs they plan for their floors or areas.

Woodstock RA John Hayes sees programming as one of the most rewarding parts of his job. "Having a fun program where I can interact with my residents on a positive note is very refreshing. Seeing people drop their guards and socialize comfortably with new people makes being an RA worthwhile," Hayes says.

Natisha Romain, Area Coordinator of Hamlin-Powers and the Quad, believes programming on weekends offers a fun and safe way for students to socialize. "I think the purpose of these programs is to give students options other than just drinking late at night," she says.

This semester, other late-night Residence Life programs consisted of the Ice Ball and a dodge ball tournament and over 150 students attended the pancake dinner held in Ross-Brooks cafeteria. All of these programs took place on a Friday or Saturday night and lasted until at least 1:00 a.m..
