Science and math at Clarkson

More than 300 students from local high schools were on the Clarkson University campus this Saturday, February 6, 2010 to participate in science and math events.
Clarkson hosted 20 regional high school teams for the Adirondack Regional C Division Science Olympiad. A total of 250 students and 40 teacher coaches attended the event, which took place in Clarkson's Science Center. It began with an 8:30 a.m. welcome and ended with a 3:00 p.m. awards ceremony.
Teams competing included Massena, Potsdam (2 teams), Canton (2 teams), Ogdensburg, Carthage (2 teams), Watertown (2 teams), Plattsburgh, Long Lake, Seaway Tech, Madrid-Waddington, Chateaugay, Thousand Islands, Norwood-Norfolk, Lisbon, Brasher Falls and Colton-Pierrepont schools.
Events included the Egg-Onaut: water bottle rocket to carry an egg safety;…It's About Time: students built a non-electronic timing device; Mission Possible: Rube Goldberg machine to accomplish designated tasks; Disease Detectives; Elevated Bridge: students build a bridge capable of supporting a weight, lightest structure to support the most weight wins; Trajectory: students build a catapult and predict target position; and the Mousetrap Vehicle.
The Plattsburg team came in first, followed by the Chateaugay team, Watertown and Ogdensburg.

Also on Saturday, more than 70 middle school students from eight area schools (Brasher, Colton, Hermon DeKalb, Lisbon, Ogdensburg, Potsdam, Edwards Knox, Norwood-Norfolk) competed in the Mathcounts competition. The event was held in the Cheel Campus Center Barben Rooms from 9:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m..
Clarkson University undergraduate and graduate students had mentored all of these teams, working with the school's coaches (attending the team's once a week meetings) to prepare them for this competition.
The top winners are eligible to attend the State Competition in March. Ben Miller won the competition.
